When Montriveau meets Antoinette de Navarreins, he is taken by her at first sight, encouraged by her who is up to her usual society tricks. Montriveau tries, in vain, to obtain an irrefutable proof of love. To which Antoinette opposes, hypocritically, religious arguments. During a ball, Montriveau takes her away, hands and feet bound.
