Pinuccio Lovero had always dreamed of becoming a gravedigger. After many odd jobs, this 40-year-old Italian was certain he was the right man for the funeral business. Pinuccio's friends and acquaintances know all about it: "He'd always end up talking about dead bodies." Meanwhile, Pinuccio found a job at the small cemetery of Mariotto. He cleans tombstones until they shine, waters the flowers, digs new graves and clears out old ones. We see Pinuccio at work in the sweltering heat while crickets sing in the background. Visitors are pleased with the new employee, but Pinuccio is missing something: dead people. While everyone else is glad that there haven't been any deaths for months Pinuccio seems to bring luck he can't wait to put on his gravedigger's suit. Perhaps the hot summer weather will help. 'm just hoping that in this heat, someone will die." He often sits beside the fan with his empty register, musing about life, music, mourning and love. Director Pippo Mezzapesa has a keen eye for detail in the cemetery, such as the flowers and photos on the graves. Visitors walking among the tombstones in slow motion, bringing flowers for their loved ones, provide a framework for Pinuccio's story.
