Last April, Gianfranco Pannone was preparing a documentary on the novelist Ignazio Silone with the students of the Accademia dell'Immagine de L'Aquila, when the earthquake struck and stopped the whole project, seriously damaging the film school as well. What got made instead was Immota manet, a brief documentary which interweaves images of the quake and passages form Silone's Uscita di sicurezza. The writer from Abruzzo vividly described the earthquake of 1915 which killed his mother and other relatives, and added a warning against all those profiteers who made money off the catastrophe by siphoning off the funding that was earmarked for reconstruction. Silone's warning is just as pertinent today.
