The summer of 1959. Happy people at the seaside. The voice of an adult recalls those days. The memory of that Summer is still alive in him: it was the last one he spent with his brother Rosario before the latter left for the North. From that moment on, it is the letters Rosario sends from Milan that keep the two brothers in touch. He tells of his new life, of the freedom he has gained, the friends he spends his time with; he writes about a magical, fairytale world where everyone gets what they want. But those letters start alarming his family: since Rosario has been in Milan he has become a rebel, he has even forgotten he had promised to marry Rosalba - a girl from his village who loves him. The parents realise something needs to be done and decide to leave and bring their son back home. This is the start of a journey which will take this family through the whole of Italy, discovering a country which, in the middle of its economic boom, is changing before their very eyes. Soon their journey becomes a kind of dream, featuring Naples’s contradictions, the Rome of the Olympics and La Dolce Vita, the idealisation of foreign women and the Romagna coast. But Milan is their final goal, where they will find out the truth about Rosario.
