Gianfranco Pannone profiles the oldest Jewish community in the west, the one in Rome, by means of three eye-witnesses representing as many generations: David, formerly the right-hand man to Elio Toaff, the former chief rabbi of Rome; Giovanni, a forty-something who has decided to invest in Jewish food and wine culture, and of harbours a strong religious feeling, like many people of his age; and Michela, thirty, a mother and tour guide in Rome’s Ghetto, where, thanks to her fluent English, she takes sightseers on tours that link past and present.
