At the icy outermost reaches of northern Canada, 14-year-old Luke learns that a polar bear cub has been separated from its mother. To reunite them, Luke enlists the aid of Muktuk, an Inuit guide who knows the unforgiving polar bear territory very well. The pair must learn to defend themselves and the cub from all the perils of this gleaming, snowbound wilderness, to get Nanuk home safely.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT:
For a film whose main
character is a polar bear cub, infant version of the
largest meat-eating mammal, the cub is the real
star, harder to sign than a Hollywood icon.
The film combines three key elements: the moving
close encounter with a polar bear cub, the beauty
and brutality of the Arctic landscape, and the
tenderness of the bond between a boy and a wild
animal.
