Federico Fellini died on October 31st, 1993. After a two day-long wake in “his” Teatro 5 at Cinecittà, which was packed, the solemn funeral ceremony was celebrated in the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Rome. Twenty years ago. Three intense days that turned into the first great media event surrounding the death of an Italian showman. The documentary relies on both images and the memories of people who were there to describe what happened.
Director’s statement
Fellini’s death was the first great event
that I covered as a television journalist. It was the first time
that you could clearly feel the kind of “media pressure” that
surrounds every event involving a famous name today. An
atmosphere somewhere between obsession and feuilleton,
which I tried to convey using a simple approach: asking the
people that were there to talk about those moments, but using
the images from twenty years ago.
