The poet Maria Luisa Spaziani has lived in Rome for over forty years. The poem/novel Giovanna d’Arco (1990) is one of her most experimental works. One of its most remarkable features is the invention of a language spoken by the angel. For Spaziani, the angel is poetry itself, or, in her own words: “No path deceives, no omen lies. Whoever wrestles with the angel remains phosphorescent”. It means that for those who read poetry, people and things have an aura around them. They become phosphorescent.”
