When Leo and his little sister Annetta wake up in the morning, their mother Emma is still sleeping in her bed. Or maybe not. Leo and Annetta spend the entire day by themselves. They have breakfast, they make a mess, they play. They wait, experiencing what their lives would be like without their mother. Until their grandmother and Gabriele, Emma’s partner, arrive. Until, with the adults and with words, the ambiguity dissolves and they all face the evening in their own way.
DIRECTOR'S NOTES
“reCuiem comes from a short story I wrote over ten years ago. I have two daughters, who are now over eighteen; when they were growing up, I would often ask myself what would happen to them if I died. The short story I wrote originated from this question and their child-like curiosity about death. I didn’t want to answer all the questions; I wanted to observe them, to embrace them. Years later, dealing with the reality of mourning rendered every detail of the story vivid, bringing back the remote aspiration of turning it into a film.”
