The protagonist is a professor of philology that goes into crisis after reading an anonymous letter to a magazine in which he is vilified. He investigates to find out who is the author and in the meantime, his life becomes more complicated: he realizes to live in a hostile environment and that his marriage has many problems. Only at the end he will find out who is the author of the letter.
