It’s the story of Gaetano Laterza’s redemption. He is the right-hand man of Don Carmelo, padrino of the Sacra Corona Unita (United Sacred Crown). Gaetano Laterza (Tano) falls for Vittoria, a charming woman and wants to change his life. But it’s not permitted to quit the mob.
DIRECTOR'S NOTES:
Film with a complicated plot, The Broken Crown’s fast-editing condenses the story into 114 minutes. Most of the smaller players are non-actors from Taranto, South Italy, with a troubled past (and many with a troubled present as well) and problems with Italian Justice. The decision to use them in the film is the result of the desire to give a neo-realistic touch to the film. The reconstructions of the rituals of the Sacra Corona Unita were made possible thanks to the advices of former members thereof. The rather static camera - compensated by the dynamic editing - captures the psychology of the characters as well as the beauty of the ambientation, giving the classical feel of many ‘Mafia movies’ of the past with the plus of an ending that recalls the Greek Tragedy.
