La meglio gioventù

Golden Grolle for the Italian film that was most present in all of the International festivals equal tie for
Private
by Saverio Costanzo
and Vento di Terra
Thanks to the collaboration of Premio Saint-Vincentfor the Cinema and AIP-Filmitalia, three new prizes were designated, acknowledging Italian cinema abroad. For the first time in the history of Italian awards, prizes were given to our films that were most successful outside of our nation’s borders, heralding them as citizens of the world.
The assignment of the awards was based on a thorough inquiry which involved collecting data from the companies that represented Italian films in the International market for the year 2004. Based on these facts, we can rightfully state that, the territories where the films were sold, the number of tickets that were sold in the respective countries as well as participation in the International festivals, qualify as officially documented results. We are particularly pleased of the achievements as each of the winning films in their own right, was faced with actual production challenges.
In Non ti muovere, casting an International diva like Penelope Cruz, as well as offering her the role of a lifetime, and giving us one of her best performances, comparable only to the one, in Tutto su mia madre proved noteworthy .
In Vento di Terraproviding the risky challenges were the film’s distinctive choices, an unknown actor, and a subject like the uranium question in the Kosovo war, considered taboo.
For Private the challenge was absolute: an Italian director making his debut, the spotlight on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, casting the most well known actors from those same countries, and an Italian location used to represent an Israeli settlement in Arab countries.
Lastly, an exceptional paradox : La meglio gioventù,a six hour length film for television which earned the highest number of movie theatre spectators for an Italian film, in a foreign country.
These are the Italian movies that were most sold, most seen and most present overseas, in the year 2004. Besides the talent and creativity, often attributed to the Italians, this time they are also acknowledged for their courage.
