Berlinale 2008: An Italian for every section

Berlinale 2008: An Italian for every section

PRESS RELEASE – Italian Cinema steps forward at the first major International appointment with a group of authors and films like we haven’t seen in a long while. Beginning with Francesco Rosi who will receive the Golden Bear for Life Achievement (already a winner in Berlin in 1962, receiving the Silver Bear award for Salvatore Giuliano) and be paid tribute with a selection of 13 of his films, from I magliari in 1959 to La tregua in 1997, which trace an important and eloquent journey through our great cinema. In competion we find "Quiet Chaos" (Caos Calmo) by Antonello Grimaldi, starring Nanni Moretti who will be in attendance, and "Heart of Fire" by Luigi Falorni, a German/Austrian co-production. Three titles have been selected for Panorama: "Sonétaula" by Salvatore Mereu, Sardinian director Ballo a tre passi, "Corazones de mujer" by Davide Sordella and Pablo Benedetti (aka K. Kosoof) and the documentary "Suddenly, Last Winter" (Improvvisamente l’inverno scorso) by Gustav Hofer and Luca Ragazzi. The Berlinale’s focus on young directors is confirmed by the selection of a rising new Italian director in Forum presenting "Motherland" (La terramadre), an “indipendent” by Nello La Marca. Young Italian cinema is also present in the Short competition section with "Giganti" by Fabio Mollo, "Impermanent" by Mario Rizzi and the animation "Teat Beat of Sex" by Signe Baumane. Anna Di Francisca’s project "Le Ragazze di Alburquerque" will participate in the Co-Production Market, and as the crowning achievement of his year of successes, Elio Germano will represent Italy at this year’s Shooting Stars ceremony, which presents the faces of future stars to the Berlinale public.
