"At the start of the movie, Ali arrives by sea to a place from where he must soon escape. He must go elsewhere. Where he doesn’t know. Even the people of Palma go elsewhere. Inhabitants of a land whose physical appearance already represents a divided and dividing world where the only survivors are elsewhere: physically, geographically, like Germany (where some of them have begun again migrating) and imaginary, metaphysical , of extreme religious beliefs, mystical or in telecasted universal dreams.

At Palma di Montechiaro our set was the elsewhere where most of the Palma people took refuge ...as we did with them, soon realising that in our world of filmmaking, where we work anixously to conjure up a set, this parallel virtual world, maybe the survivors are indeed elsewhere.
Now, the Motherland, the film which is only a residue of this set goes to Berlin, to Germany… and we are going with it. In the end, we all end up as migrants!"
