Istituto Luce Cinecittà - Filmitalia is happy to announce that Rai Com has sold Black Souls to UK distributor Vertigo Films on the eve of its premiere at the BFI London Film Festival.
An adaptation of a novel by Gioacchino Criaco, itself based on a true story, Francesco Munzi’s Black Souls puts a new spin on the Italian family feud, playing out like a contemporary western. When a minor spat triggers the hostility of a rival clan, three brothers from Southern Italy who are steeped in the life of the ‘Ndrangheta (the Calabrian equivalent of the Mafia), are caught up in a spiral of events and emotions that escalate out of their control, heading towards tragedy.
Black Souls is the third feature film from director Francesco Munzi. The Rest of the Night premiered in Director’s Fortnight at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival, and Saimir was accorded a Special Mention in the debut film category at the 2004 Venice Film Festival.
Black Souls received its world premiere In Competition at the Venice Film Festival this year, and also screened at Toronto International Film Festival. Other sales on the film have included Good Films (Italy), Bellissima Films (France) , Palace Films (Australia and New Zealand), Film Europe (Czech Republic and Slovakia).
