The popular expression “vedi Napoli e poi muori” usually means that Naples’ beauty is so awesome, a person seeing it can die in peace, certain of never matching the sight. But from the very opening images of Enrico Caria’s provocative look at Naples today, that expression takes on a decidedly darker and more ominous tone. The director captures the contradictions, absurdities, and pleasures of his hometown: magisterial nobility rubs shoulders with some of the most desperate poverty in Italy, while the city’s booming cultural scene consistently runs up against the daily violence that is still too much a part of Neapolitan life. A revealing look at one of Italy’s great cities, as well as meditation on the problems that have become synonymous with modern urban life.
