The Mapuche, an indigenous population of Patagonia, live in symbiosis with the natural environment surrounding them. Their territory is a constructive element of their identity. Today, like in the past, the conquest of Patagonia advances along the lines of the old western logic of profit maximization by exploiting natural resources: vast landscapes, water reservoirs, oil, minerals and biodiversity. The Mapuche keep on fighting for their recognition in Argentina’s Constitution, which, since 1994, reaffirms “the indigenous people’s ancestral right to its land.”
