The Festival follows the FIAPF regulations, supported by Ministry of Culuture of Republic of Kazakhstan and “Kazakhfilm” JSC named after Sh. Aimanov. This year’s “Eurasia” is concentrated in Almaty Towers, the multifunctional building. International screenings, press conferences, round tables and other festival’s events will take place there. More than 40 (forty) films are about to be shown, that will be divided into four main sections:
1. International Competition, 12 films;
2. Dynamic Developing Kazakh Cinema, 15 films;
3. French Cinema Today, 9 films;
4. New Gala Premieres, 5 to 7 films.
International Competition section will be focused on Central Asian and Turkic films. Why is it that way? First of all, we wanted to show that today’s cinema, coming from the heart of Eurasia, is in the stage of passionary rise:
- Kazakh picture “Kelin” (directed by Y. Tursunov) was short-listed for “Oscars”;
- “The Jump of Afalina” (directed by E. Urazbayev), another kazakh film that got the Grand Prix of DetectiveFEST, an International Film Festival of Detective films;
- Turkish film “Honey” (directed by S. Kaplanoglu) got this year’s Grand Prix of Berlinale;
- Kyrgyz film “Svet Ake” (directed by Arym Kubat) became the contestant in this year’s Cannes International Film Festival;
- Azerbaijani film “Dolls” (directed by Ch. Rasulzade) participated in Karlovy Vary International Film Festival;
- Tatar film “Bibinur” (directed by Y. Feting) took prize of Saint-Petersburg Film Festival.
These films gathered together with the new discoveries demostrate the fact that the cinema of our region is stepped up on a new level.
«The Dynamic Developing Kazakh Cinema» section will showcase local films produced in 2009 and 2010. It’s the first time for the twenty years of Independence, that we achieved the production of 15 films a year, and what’s more important – motion pictures are successfully distributing in theaters. In 2009, eleven kazakh films were screened in cinemas, the other ones were produced straight to DVDs.
Noting the specific moment of film industry distribution – when the motion picture is rolled for a month in theaters and then people wait for DVDs – we want to give an opportunity to our guests to watch the films with pleasure, and our spectators – to meet their favourite actors and filmmakers. Fans will have a chance to make photos around them in the Festival centre. We suppose, young audience won’t let a chance go, especially now that we have young rising stars like Karlygash Mukhamedzhanova, Sanzhar Madiyev, Anuar Nurpeissov, Assel Sagatova, Berik Aitzhanov, Bibigul Suyunshalina, Askhat Kuchincherekov, Asha Matai, Arystan Myrzagereyev, Aliya Telebarisova and others.
«The French Cinema Today» section is co-presented with Unifrance company. Each of nine French films produced in 2010 will be accompanied by their filmmakers. Moreover, Unifrance plans to showcase the special event “Night of Short Films” – productions of young french filmmakers. A funny fact is that the french breakfast, a cup of tea and a croissant, will be offered to spectators afterwards.
«The Gala Openings of World Cinema» section is supposed to showcase the best American, European, Asian and Russian films, that have already became a real success this year. For developing the business component of the festival it is proposed to organize a Film Market, that will be held during three days inside of the festival.
Day 1 – presentation of Kazakh film projects in process of post-production;
Day 2 – presentation of Central Asian film projects, as ready, as in process films from Turkmenistan, Tadjikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan;
Day 3 – presentation of Turkish and the near abroad film projects. This day should attract the interest of TV companies, because along with films there will be also TV shows presented.
We would also like to highlight the fact, that there are no more film festivals in the world, that unite both Central Asian and Turkic cinema. It is our originality, peculiarity and uniqueness. On the other hand, we see each other’s spiritually resemblant cultures like in a mirror by the means of Cinema.
